Late Monday afternoon in the woods of rural St. Louis County, Missouri, a mushroom hunter was shocked to find a human skull on the ground near a local retirement community.

The next morning, authorities found that the skull wasn’t the only thing in the woods — they discovered what appeared to be the rest of the human remains.

According to KMOV, investigators think the body appears to have been there for at least several months.

The St. Louis County Bureau of Crimes Against Persons has since taken over the investigation.

The remains have not been identified so far, but medical examiners have determined they are of an adult male, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

KMOV’s Courtney Bryant made an interesting — and potentially terrifying — point toward the end of the news segment: This is not the first set of human remains found in the St. Louis area recently.

It is, in fact, the third time that unidentified human remains have been discovered within the past several months, raising the obvious question: What on earth is going on here?

Human bodies turning up in unusual places are generally a sign of foul play. Hopefully, the findings are just coincidence, but there is a chance these discoveries are related, and that is extremely unsettling.
